You’ve Got to Be Kidding?!?

I recently read an article in what I thought was a reputable publication until I saw this heading: “Outdated Things Boomers Always Keep and Use”.

The writer actually suggested that as time marches on and technology continues to grow that we, the Boomers, like to hang on to the “relics” of the past.  Apparently, we have a penchant for hanging on to the familiar.  I would suggest that each generation does the same in their own way.  The author said they are a reminder of “simpler time”.  Well, if all of this isn’t ageist enough, here are some of the items we relics are holding on to.

Landline Phones – It was said that Boomers value the reliability and familiar feel rather than use a smart phone.  I don’t know about you, but landlines still rule the day in most office settings.  And pretty well everyone I know has a smart phone, even my 89 year old mom.

Fax Machines – Yes, this was mentioned, but I don’t know too many Boomers who are faxing these days unless they have to.  The writer said we enjoy the tactile nature.  Yikes, sounds like we are in kindergarten.

Vinyl Records –We all appreciate digital music streaming and also proudly hold on to our collections and enjoy the nostalgic experience.  In fact, my grandkids now collect vinyl so I’m not sure I understand how this makes me a relic.

VHS Tapes – Many of us Boomers did indeed build VHS collections, but I would suggest that few continue to pop them into their VCRs.

Rolodexes – The writer suggested that Boomers prefer to use a rolodex.  That is so not true, and I can’t remember the last time I even saw one proudly perched on someone’s desk.  What was this writer thinking?

Encyclopedias – Once again, we don’t see these much anymore but prior to the internet was there another way?  The author said we enjoy “flipping through the pages”.

Film Cameras – Well, before digital there wasn’t much of an option when it comes to this one.  Apparently, us older folks, liked the patience it required to capture the perfect shot.  Truth is, most of us just use our phones.

Answering Machines – These are supposed to provide Boomers with a sense of control and privacy.  The answering machine may have taken on a new form but its usefulness lives on. What planet did this person come from?

Wall Calendars – I read that Boomers enjoy the act of physically marking important dates and events, adding a sense of anticipation to our lives.  OMG.  What is wrong with a wall calendar?  Companies still use them for marketing not for sentimental reasons.  Does a wall calendar mean I’m old?

Address Books – Seem this writer’s research showed that us Boomer tend to keep physical address books appreciating the simplicity and reliability of these. What?!?  I can’t remember the last time I used an address book.

It’s no wonder Boomers get a bad rap if these are the things being written today.
