Longevity vs Aging

What do jumbo shrimp, seriously funny, awfully good, controlled chaos, act naturally and freezer burn have in common?  They, like the term “anti-aging” are oxymorons.  Figures of speech that combine contradictory or opposing words or ideas to create unique expressions.  A simple way to convey complex idea in a memorable way.

The term “anti-aging” combines two opposing contradictions:  Anti, suggesting resistance to something and Aging, the natural process of growing older.  Together, they would suggest resisting or opposing the natural process of aging which by definition, is impossible. You can’t stop it.  No product, or lifestyle change will reverse it.

The term itself is problematic in that it promotes the idea that aging is negative and should be fought against, denied or hidden, rather than embraced as part of the human experience.  It also fosters unrealistic expectations and contributes to ageism.

The beauty and cosmetics industries have heavily marketing “anti-aging” products and capitalize on peoples’ fear of aging, encouraging many to deny their age rather than embrace it.  So, some have made adaptations using phrases like “aging gracefully” or “age positive” in an attempt to focus on self-acceptance rather than focus on the ideals of eternal youth.  Kind of like putting lipstick on a pig.

Longevity, on the other hand, focuses on the aspect of a long, healthy and fulfilling life rather than the process of getting older and highlights the potential to continue to contribute in meaningful ways.  It is inspirational and shifts the focus from the mere passage of years to the potential for the most remarkable adventures.
